Each week this Fall, we will be highlighting the ‘SLB Game of the Week’ that features two college football teams where SLB is located. This fall’s first SLB Game of the Week is:
Iowa State vs Iowa
The Iowa vs. Iowa State rivalry started in 1894 and they play for the Cy-Hawk Trophy. In the week leading up to the game, Sigma Lambda Beta’s chapters in Iowa (Alpha Chapter) and Iowa State (Omicron Chapter) will engage in a rivalry against each other. Brother Rob Cannon (Alpha Chapter) says, “It’s mostly just good banter. It provided a good way for us to talk smack and reconnect with the other chapter early in the semester.”
Brother Daniel Mendez (Alpha Chapter) further elaborates, “The Iowa vs Iowa State rivalry is the first thing you are told as a student. I knew about the rivalry before I knew about the Betas. So it’s a love/hate/love relationship, especially as Brothers. Iowa leaned on ISU during my neo years so they showed us how to do Brotherly hospitality things which is a big part of being a Brother. This week is big for me just because I get to talk smack to some of my brothers I really love and appreciate a lot. On the chapter level we would host each other depending where [the game] was played so tailgating with brothers during the Iowa/ISU game is epic.”
In the end, Brothers know that the game is good fun and brings Brothers from different chapters together. Brother Brian Castro (Omicron) explains, “We host joint tailgates and some of us watch the game together if we can’t make it to the game. The Iowa-Iowa State rivalry brought both chapters closer as we got to get to know each other better during the games. Alpha and Omicron supports each other’s events.”
